Artistic and musical culture
The city of Parma and its entire province had already fascinated connoisseurs of taste and beauty in ancient times.
The province’s castles guard frescoes that reveal stories of powerful personalities who fell in love with this territory for its multifaceted richness. Among the best known historical figures are Count Pier Maria Rossi, whose history is linked to the castles of Torrechiara and Roccabianca, a number of painters, musicians and, last but not least, the Duchess of Parma Maria Luigia of Austria, who in the early 19th century turned Parma into a city worthy of the great European capitals.
Italy’s greatest opera composer, Giuseppe Verdi, was born in Busseto (PR) in 1813. He affirmed himself with operas that are performed in theatres all over the world, in particular, the so-called ‘Verdi triad’ (Rigoletto (1851), Il trovatore (1853) and La traviata (1853)). Va’ pensiero and Nabucco, these are recognised as works that reveal how much Verdi’s music had been assimilated into the national consciousness. Analysing the works that reflect his personal and professional development, one recognises the signs of a love for the passions of life that is typical of his homeland: Parma.
